A YAG laser is a specialized medical laser used in ophthalmology to treat certain conditions affecting vision. This technology is utilized in a treatment called YAG capsulotomy. It treats posterior capsule opacification, a condition in which the thin membrane holding an artificial lens becomes cloudy.

The YAG laser creates a small opening in this membrane, allowing light to pass through clearly again, restoring perfect vision. YAG laser treatment is highly precise and does not involve cutting or stitches.

YAG Capsulotomy is a laser-based procedure that’s performed in our Fort Myers or Naples surgery centers. Although often referred to as YAG laser eye surgery, this treatment is non-invasive and performed while the patient is seated at a laser microscope. The doctor will administer eye drops prior to the procedure to dilate the pupil and numb the eye.

YAG laser treatment isn’t painful. However, patients may notice brief flashes of light during the procedure. Afterward, vision may be temporarily blurry due to dilation, but this effect will wear off within a few hours.

Patients are typically able to return to their normal activities on the same day. Post-care instructions may include avoiding strenuous activity and using eye drops for a short time.
